What is Vancouver South Better at Home?

Better at Home is a program designed to assist older adults (65+) to live independently in their homes by providing non-medical support services to older adults living in South Vancouver. Services are charged on a sliding scale based on income.

The program is delivered through a partnership between South Vancouver Neighbourhood House (SVNH) and Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society (PICSS) and is funded by the B.C. government.

Eligibility

If you are an older adult (65+) living in the South Vancouver Community, you may be eligible to access services.

Area of Service

Vancouver South Better at Home boundaries:

  • South of East 41st Avenue
  • North of the Fraser River
  • East of Ontario Street
  • West of Boundary

Light Yard Work

Light yard work services include lawn mowing and yard clean up. Equipment must be provided by the client. Sliding scale fees apply, some services may be free.

Light Housekeeping

Assistance with housekeeping tasks that are physically too difficult for a senior to perform. Housekeeping services are provided by trained staff.  Cleaning supplies and equipment including vacuum must be provided by the client.  Services are provided in partnership with Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS).

Housekeeping services may include but are not limited to:

  • Dusting
  • Floor Cleaning
  • Vacuuming
  • Laundry and Bed Making
  • Washroom Cleaning
  • Dishwashing
  • Kitchen Cleaning (no internal appliances)

Housekeeping services does NOT provide:

  • Personal hygiene assistance (bathing or grooming)
  • Medical or physical assistance (including medication)
  • Meal preparation and/or pet care

Housekeeping services are provided through Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society.

Transportation

Safe affordable transportation for seniors 65+ living in South East Vancouver. Priority will be given to older adults with mobility challenges that affect their ability to undertake day-to-day tasks. Services will be charged on a sliding scale based on income, some services may be free. Registration is required.

Friendly Phone Calls

Friendly visits are provided through phone calls and virtually to help overcome the challenges of independent living and provide companionship. Visits help you feel connected to community and meet new people.  Provided by volunteers who receive training. Free service.

Due to COVID-19 some Better at Home services are temporarily suspended.
