Many older adults in Canada are eligible for federal pension benefits, but sometimes we are not aware of what is available or when to apply. Programs such as Old Age Security (OAS) and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) provide important financial support, especially for those on limited incomes.
· There are also lesser-known benefits like the Allowance and the Allowance for the Survivor for individuals aged 60 to 64. Many people may miss out, simply because they are not aware that these programs exist.
· A key point to remember is timing. While some seniors are automatically enrolled in OAS, many are not. To avoid delays, it is recommended to apply as early as age 64 so that payments can begin on time at age 65.
· Applying online through My Service Canada Account is simple and convenient. It allows you to apply anytime, receive confirmation right away, and track your application.
· Another important reminder is to file your taxes every year, even if your income is low. Benefits such as GIS depend on your tax information, and delays in filing can affect your payments.
· Family members, caregivers, and community organizations can also play an important role by helping seniors understand and access these benefits.
Taking a few simple steps like learning about available benefits and applying early can make a meaningful difference to financial security in later life.
