Here’s an update taken from our SVSACS Annual General Meeting of June 16, 2016.
Vancouver City staff held an Open House at Killarney on April 26, 2016 to show drawings and plans for the new Seniors Centre. The event was attended by more than 100 community members who were invited to share their comments and they certainly did that. Most requests were for:
- improved accessibility so people with mobility problems could get to the entrance without a long walk,
- an indoor waiting area where Handi-Dart users can see their driver’s approach,
- installation of a second elevator for safety and convenience and
- a stage for special events in the Dining Room.
The Project Manager’s Team went back to the drawing boards, made several design changes and we were informed that, as a result of Open House feedback, the centre will have the second elevator, an access road with turn-around for a 24-seater bus, and a fold-down stage in the large multi-purpose room on the main floor.
Members are very pleased with this positive response. Community Seniors feel reassured their opinions do count, their opinions are respected and somebody up there is listening.
I believe there is increased optimism and hope that the new Centre will soon be opened. The estimated completion date is still given officially as 2018 but everyone wants to believe it will be sooner, and yes, we now believe in miracles!
Thanks Seniors Hub readers for your support. We hope to keep the updates coming to you regularly.
