Through funding from the New Horizons for Seniors program, the YMCA Active Seniors program trains older adults to become certified group fitness leaders and teach YMCA adult fitness classes to their peers. The goals of the program are to improve health and quality of life, and decrease social isolation among senior populations.
We have recruited and trained 16 older adults to serve as Active Seniors fitness leaders, and we are now recruiting 80 new seniors to participate in these fitness classes.
The program will begin on January 11th, 2016 and takes place across three YMCA Membership Centres:
- Robert Lee YMCA
- Langara Family YMCA, and
- Chilliwack Family YMCA
Eligibility:
- participants must be adults 55+
- participants must not be a current YMCA member
- participants must attend an Active Seniors Information Session
- participants must be willing and able to participate in two-three fitness classes per week.
To register for an Information Session, those interested should contact Kali Dean directly, by email or phone at 604-673-6179. Information Sessions spots will be filled on a first come/first serve basis.
Please share this program with anyone who may be interested. More info on the YMCA of Greater Vancouver website.
Due to the high volume of inquiries we have had regarding the Active Seniors program, priority will be given to those with the highest level of commitment to the program and those who are currently the least active.
